As a consultant, I like to pride myself in keeping an open mind and just listening to clients problems in hopes that we can provide a solution. There is one question I have been asked more than once, and it still gives me pause because I truly want to give an unbiased answer; "Does my business really need a website?"

This is truly a very good question, one many business owners have asked themselves since the inception of the Internet. Everybody has an opinion and I am sure if you are a business owner there are plenty who will offer you that opinion.

Years ago I worked in the office equipment industry. The companies I worked for sold copiers and printers to businesses, organization, etc. During my tenure at my last copier company, HP rolled out a new copier line. They simply relabeled a line from Konica Minolta.

Our company decided to pick up this line and sell it.

It wasn't a very good copier line. Which is probably why the product line was scrapped after a short while.

I remember asking our rep, "Who is your target market?"

Back came the response, "We sell to small & medium business, departments in large businesses and large businesses."

"So," I said, "you sell to everyone?"

Executing an advertising campaign using any medium can be significantly challenging. The question of whom to target, how to target them, and what message to convey can sometimes leave an advertiser with too many questions to handle. As the inherent nature of the online community is to be wary of promotions or messages on the Internet, it makes the task of delivering the communication even more challenging for the online marketer.

We have long been inundated with offerings for Google Plus, Google’s very own take on social media, in the recent years. Google is known for quite a few things in the world, and making social media a priority has been at the top of their list for quite some time. While a far cry away from other juggernauts like Facebook and Twitter, Google can offer a unique perspective to businesses in terms of branding and getting a message to a particular audience. For those that thought Google Plus would just fade into the distance were just proven wrong as Google has launched its new take on helping businesses succeed with their new social platform.

In June, Google announced Google My Business. The plan is to integrate all of what Google has to offer and gear it toward small business owners. This includes local search results, a Google Plus page for businesses, and the myriad Google Apps that business owners have come to love. Just as people thought Google may pull the plug on their take on social media, they just made it easier to use and more efficient.

You may have noticed some changes in the social media marketing race this year. Facebook has reduced organic reach for business pages, twitter opened up their paid advertisement platform, and now Instagram is stepping up to the plate. When it comes to brand activity, how close is the race? Facebook is still taking a large portion of the social media marketing pie, but don’t be fooled, Instagram is right on their tail.
