We all have a desire to be successful. Whether it’s success in business, family, or just success in overcoming a bad habit. The destination may look different, but the steps to getting there are all the same. Here are 5 steps that we’ve found to be essential to success in life.
Stop Being Average
You already know about setting goals, but many people overlook the importance of the first step. You need to make the decision. Stop letting yourself be just another average Joe. It’s time to decide if you are really serious about being successful in anything you do. This kind of success requires a mindset that is different from the rest of the heard. It requires the ability to think and act outside the box and be willing to make the changes that need to happen to be able to reach your goals. It’s time to pull away from the herd and start thinking for you.
Identify Your Dreams
Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and try to relax. Push all the thoughts out of your mind. Ask yourself a question and try to be honest with yourself when you answer it. Here’s the question: “If I could change anything in my life what would it be?” The answer doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be anything. Once you’ve answered your question, paint a picture in your mind of what this situation would look like if you changed it. Really paint it with all of your senses so you get a clear picture. Now that you have this image in your mind, open your eyes and write down a couple of paragraphs that describe what you saw. The picture is your dream. It will be one of many. Each thing in your life that you want to improve on or change starts with a dream. You can use this method for anything that you want to change. If you don’t clarify what you want it will be very hard to get it.
Set Your Goals
We’ve all heard the importance of setting goals. Let’s start by defining what a goal is. A goal is a set guideline of when and how to complete a task. It could also be the completed task itself, depending on the situation. If your goal is to reach your dream than you would decide what needs to happen and how quickly you can and want it to happen.
Grab your favorite pen and paper and create a list of all the things that need to be done to reach your dream. Under each item, identify and what needs to happen for that task to be accomplished. This is how you set mini milestones for your goal. Once you are done with that make a timeframe for each milestone and for the overall goal and stick to it. Make sure it’s realistic.
What sets apart the average Joe from the successful one is the ability of that person to consistently put forth the effort to accomplishing their goals. That is where motivation comes in. You have to learn the skill of keeping the fire going inside you.
Find what works and stick with it. If reading this blog helps you then read it on a regular basis. If exercising keeps your confidence up then don’t miss a workout. And, whenever you feel your drive start to fade or you start questioning why you’re doing what you’re doing, just go back to that pad of paper and re-read your dream. This will re-kindle the fire and get you back on track.
The process to achieving your goal should be enjoyable. As you reach each milestone you should be proud of your progress. You will always be working on the next big goal, so if you are only happy when you reach it, you will never be happy. Success in life is not about reaching a final destination. It’s about the process you took to get there.
