The Power of Social Media

Like most football fanatics, I was glued to my couch last night watching my Seattle Seahawks take on the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football. Also like most football fanatics, I was blown away by the less-than-adequate performance by the National Football League’s replacement referees.

In case you are not familiar, the regular NFL referees are currently in a work stoppage as they work out a contract dispute with the NFL. During last night’s game, there were many bad calls and then to top it off, there was a bad call on the last play of the game that gave Seattle the victory. The replacement referees performance has been a hot topic during the first part of the season and last night the negative reaction from fans and players hit an all time high.

Where did everyone do to vent? Social Media. My Facebook and Twitter feeds blew up with people sharing their moodiness (or happiness for Seahawk fans).  It wasn’t just limited to fans reactions either, NFL players and reporters got into the act as well.

Last night was just another example of the power of Social Media in this day and age, and how bad publicity can explode on the various social media channels. It is also important to note that the NFL did not respond to this 'crisis' until late this morning, in which they supported the final call of the game.  One would think that this much negative attention on the NFL would be enough for the labor stoppage to get worked out soon.
