The Myths Surrounding SEO

Written by Hannah Lacy | Feb 3, 2015 5:27:00 PM

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, has a lot of smoke still surrounding its process and uses. Many times it is considered either ineffective, without order or unneeded. But what are the realities of SEO? I would like to utilize this blog to debunk some of the most common myths about SEO.

SEO is Without Order nor Worth

Anyone who has worked closely with SEO tactics know this to be untrue. SEO is a process that can be customized to each client, giving the results us marketers expect. The process of Search Engine Optimization can seem useless to some business owners who hire someone to perform SEO and don't immediately see their page jump to the top of Google. The truth is, SEO takes time to be effective. Consistent linking and the use of keywords will bring your website steadily closer to the first position on search engines.

SEO is Easy-it Should be Cheap

When you hire an individual or agency to perform SEO, you are not hiring someone to change a couple of tags on your website. SEO, like most technology, changes on a daily basis. The true SEO experts are constantly studying, testing and learning in order to stay current on the most effective tactics. Tribute Media is a company that puts great focus and priority on continued education for all of their employees, from Development to Marketing, encompassing SEO specialists. You are not just hiring for services; you are hiring a knowledge base.

SEO Audits are Cheap

Gathering and analyzing SEO data is not a simple task. Although technology such as Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics make the job easier, to be truly thorough and accurate, running these reports and making them understandable to clients takes time; a ton of work is done manually. Images, image alt tags, meta descriptions, keywords, and blog content all have to be reviewed manually. While Webmaster Tools covers what Google Analytics does not, there is so much more that must be gather manually. In addition, Google is not the only search engine to keep an eye on. Apple's contract with Google is expiring in 2015, are Bing and Yahoo have lost no time scheduling talks with Eddy Cue, Apple's Internet software and services senior V.P.

Build it and They Will Come

In order to be competitive, you can't simply launched a site and expect it to receive an influx of traffic because it exists. Proper link acquisition is essential to a high-traffic site. Content is certainly a tactic that cannot be ignored; content drives SEO in a big way and should always be of high-quality. However, link-building will position you incredibly well. The exception to this rule, as every rule has an exception, would be huge, well-known businesses. But if you are launching a new site, odds are you are not Nike and will have to encourage visitors with an actual strategy.

SEO is Dead

This is a joke thrown around by those not in the SEO industry. The suggestion that SEO is dead and shouldn't be used anymore is simply incorrect. Organic search remains the number one tactic for bringing people to your site, both on computers and mobile devices. If someone tells you not to worry about SEO and that it's an outdated tactic, just know that you are allowing the bulk of traffic to pass you by. SEO should not be thought of as an add-on services, it is essential to a successful web campaign, which as we all know is essential to a successful business.
