Mind Your Meta

Last week I went over why it is important to always keep your content evolving from the series "10 Ways to Increase your Website's Performance."  Today we are going to take a gander at what goes on behind the scenes and address site descriptions and tags.

Let's break down what they are and what roles they play in page rankings and overall SEO.

Site descriptions, a.k.a. Meta Description

The definition of a site description, also known as the meta description, is a snippet of HTML code in the web page header section. That is the technical definitions and is about a clear as mud for most people. A layman's definitions is that a meta description is a brief summary of what the website content is about.  When writing your meta description, keep it short. Seventy characters (including spaces) or under. I know that sounds short, but a well-written site description will easily fit that.

Topic Tags

Topic tags are those one or two-word descriptions at the end of a blog. They are intended to not only help readers navigate your website for similar blog subjects, but also have the added benefit of making your blog more “sticky” for visitors. By "sticky", I mean keeping a visitor clicking through your site using the tags. Topic tags make it easy to keep readers interested in what you have to say. 

Image "alt" tags

Using the right image can grab a reader's attention in a nano second. But that amazing picture selection also comes with a little SEO boost.  By populating the image alt tag field with one or two keywords, search engines can index the image under those keywords. Bonus! But beware, using any more keywords in that alt tag field may cause the search engines to think you're keyword stuffing and penalize you.
