Are You Googleable?

Googleable, noun: Something that is able to be found on the popular Internet search engine Google.

Now that we have that out of the way, are you Googleable? This isn't just a question of "can someone type in my business name and find my website." Of course they can! Your site is fully optimized for your business name. But can they find you by searching for your services?

Google: Coffee Shops Near Me

Let's just pretend that you're a local coffee shop. If I am looking for a place to get coffee and free wi-fi, and I'm about to pull out of the driveway, are you going to come up? It won't just magically happen, and I'm going to click on one of the first few coffee shops, so even if you are number 13, you're not going to see me today.

The Remedy

In the case of your business, you didn't get the pleasure of serving me coffee today. How can you change that for next time? I would recommend doing some Search Engine Optimization (SEO). First off, you'll need:

  • research based on your geographic area (people in New York search differently than people in Idaho)
  • some great keywords
  • time, effort and tactics

Once you do research (Google Adwords can be a great tool), you can start choosing keywords! Let's say "coffee shops near me" is searched pretty often, and you go for that "longtail" keyword; what's next?

Now you start inserting that keyword on your website. You can work it into your homepage! Add tags to your pages, add it as an image alt tag where appropriate, and you're on your way.

Relax and Sip Your Coffee

Now, don't get discouraged if you aren't number 3 for that keyword within the week. SEO takes time, lots of time. But the long term return of getting yourself on the first page for such a common keyword; there's no comparison. Your work will pay off, so keep it up!
