Mollom is a great service for fighting spam and it is very easy to set up. While we develop in Drupal and use it for our Drupal sites, you can use it with a variety of content management systems. So, for you WordPress fanatics that don’t want to use Akismet anymore, you can use Mollom as well.
Here are the step by step instructions.
- Go to http://mollom.com/user/register and create a user account.
- After you have received your email, go back to http://mollom.com/user and log in.
- At the top of the page, you will see an option to “Manage Sites”
Or you can go to http://mollom.com/site-manager - When you first login to this site manager, you will only have the option to add a new subscription. After you have added a subscription, you can edit any of the sites you manage.
Click on “add the first one” or “Add Subscription” - You have the option to select a free or plus subscription. Choose the one that best fits how your site will use the service… most blogs and small business will select the free service.
- You will be presented with a form to enter your site details. Complete the form and click next.
- Verify your settings and click “complete subscription.”
- You will then be redirected back to your site manager and you will now see your site listed.
- You’ll need to click on the link to view keys and you’ll be presented with this page:

- Now you can go to your site. If we have configured your site for you, you can skip steps 10 and 11. In our case, we go to our Drupal site. You’ll need to install your module (plugin, extension) to your site. You can download the right file from the downloads page at Mollom.
- After Mollom is installed, you can configure it at the configuration page. For Drupal, there are two places you need to go. First, go your permissions page (http://www.example.com/admin/user/permissions) and give any roles that need to bypass filtering permissions to do so.

- For Mollom configuration go to the Mollom module configuration (http://www.example.com/admin/settings/mollom). The first thing you will notice is that you need to enter your keys from step 9 above:
- After you save the configuration, you can see site usage statistics and can change spam protection settings. You will see a list of forms that you have. These forms are comment forms and the various content types that can be created.
Now your site will see a marked reduction in spam.
