Drupal started as a simple bulletin board system in 2001 and has evolved into a fully featured web content management system (CMS). The word “Drupal” is an English rendering of the Dutch word “druppel.” It means drop, as in a drop of water.
A content management system is designed to provide an easy way for website maintainers to add pages to their website without having to understand how to write web page code. There are a variety of content management systems available. Drupal is one of the most robust and supported content management systems available today.
Drupal is Open Source. That means that it is community supported. There are over 350,000 registered users at Drupal.org. Some are developers like Tribute Media. Others are end users to the product. We believe in contributing back to the Drupal community.
One of the largest criticisms of Drupal is that it requires a steep learning curve if you are trying to learn how to configure Drupal yourself. Many developers build systems, like Drupal, for themselves. The reality is that because of the robust nature of Drupal and the power that it provides, it can be a daunting system to understand. The benefits of this robust system far outweigh difficulty in configuring it.
At Tribute Media, our goal is to make Drupal easy. We have achieved this goal for our end users.
You may choose to hire us to build your site for you or you may choose to go it alone. We believe strongly that if someone wants to take the time and effort to learn, we’ll be ready to help. We have tutorials built for this very purpose. If you would like to hire us to provide some consulting or on-site training, please contact us.
As you read about the key features of Drupal, bear in mind that the description of Drupal here is based on our build of Drupal. We have spent time creating a build of Drupal that makes it easy for the end user. That means that some of the description following will require some configuration that is beyond the core build of Drupal. If you have us build your new site, these descriptions will apply directly to you.
